TE 801 Professional Roles & Teaching Practice
Fall 2006
Instructor: L. Kirks
Course Description: This course assisted students in the transition from student to teacher during the internship year. The class had a math focus. Students learned to get to know their classes as well as how to shift gears from planning lesson by lesson to mapping out the year and creating larger units. Students used their placement as a way to learn about their students and use data to guide instruction.
TE 802 Reflection and Inquiry in Teaching Practice I

Course Description: In this course, students learned about teachers' professional and ethical responsibilities related to classroom instruction. This class was designed to help students transition from a college student to a teacher during the internship year. Another focus of the course was the use of a balanced approach to literacy learning. A reading unit was created around a self selected text and grade.

Course Description: In this course, students examined the interrelationships among standards, instruction, and assessment to improve student achievement in science. The focus of this class was to begin to understand and apply the inquiry model of teaching science. A goal for this course was also be able to integrate science and inquiry across the curriculum.
CEP 883 Psychology of Classroom Discipline

Course Description: In this course, students learned about a variety of classroom management techniques and how to apply them to their classrooms. The goal was to learn how to create a welcoming classroom that all students felt safe in and thrived. The focus was on being more proactive versus reactive and how to address behavioral challenges in the classroom.

Course Description: In this course, students examined teachers as professionals as well as learned about inquiry as a way to improve our instruction. The focus was on using both personal and published research to guide instruction and for personal reflection. For this class I chose to do research on autism since I have an autistic student or someone on the spectrum every year.
TE 846 Accommodating Different Literacy Learners

Course Description: In this course, students learn to meet the needs of all their students in literacy. I did a case study that focused on two of my students who were struggling with reading. In my cases study, I used different assessment tools to identify where my students were struggling and developed two lessons for each child that were best tailored to their needs.

Course Description: In this course, students explore a variety of genres and research about writing in order to strengthen their ability in writing instruction. In this course, I was required to do personal writing in a variety of genres. By doing so, I became current on the latest research on writing development. I concluded the class by creating a writing unit for my own classroom.
TE 842 Elementary Reading Assessment and Instruction

In this course, students develop an understanding of reading development as well as being exposed to a variety of reading assessments and best practices in reading instruction. Through various case studies, I learned to analyze assessments to generate goals for students. Then I came up with different strategies/lessons to help the students achieve my goals. In addition, book clubs were used to read and discuss/review the book Comprehension and Collaboration: Inquiry Circles in Action by Harvey and Daniels.
CEP 841 Classroom Management in an Inclusive Classroom

In this course, students learned about behavioral and classroom/school management techniques. This course focused on positive behavior interventions and supports. Students learned how to identify and address behavior problems in the classroom as well as an entire school. As a conclusion to this course, I created a PowerPoint presentation on Autism to help inform staff members about students with this disorder and strategies to help them in the classroom
ED 870 Capstone Seminar

Course Description: This was the final course in my Master of Arts in Education program. Throughout this course I had the time to reflect on my learning in my masters program. I created an online portfolio to showcase my work and reflection.
