This course had me learning to use various assessments to analyze my students' work in order to better guide my instruction. For our final project, I had to look at assessments collected for two different students. Then I had to analyze them, create goals for instruction, and come up with two different instructional approaches to meet all of the goals I set for each student.

As a first grade teacher, my students' abilities vary greatly. Though some students seem to just take off in writing, it is not the case for all. I completed a literacy case study on two struggling students of mine. In this study, I assessed them to determine the students' needs, planned/implemented two lessons to help meet their needs, as well as repeating beginning assessments to determine level of growth. Through this project I was able to learn about various teaching strategies to help my struggling readers.

By writing in genres that I was not confident in, I was able to put myself in my students' shoes. I learned to research and immerse myself in various genres in order to create a genre portfolio. My genre portfolio leads my audience through my journey of writing a poem about my daughter. It includes my inner thoughts as well as my drafts and final work.

Small moments (personal narratives) have shown to be a struggle for my students to write year after year. Using research provided in class as well as my own, I created a unit that I believed would help my students feel more confident and be more successful in their writing. I include various lessons as well as book titles to use as mentor texts throughout the unit. Like I learned through my genre portfolio assignment in this class, students need to be immersed in the genre they are writing. We all learn best when we have examples to pull from.

In this course, I read Comprehension and Collaboration: Inquiry Circles in Action by Harvey and Daniels. I then worked collaboratively with a group to discuss the book. We met two times over the course of a few weeks. The focus of this book is on the use of inquiry circles to guide instruction. To complete our project I completed a book review as well as reflection of my instruction in literacy.
